Editor-in-Chief
31 January 2024, Sheridan, Wyoming
I am delighted to share with you the latest developments and achievements of the Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice. As we continue our mission to advance scholarly discourse and promote excellence in education research, it is my privilege to update you on the recent progress of our journal and the decisions made by our editorial board.
I am pleased to report that our journal has experienced significant growth and recognition over the past year. In 2023, we received a remarkable 2,082 submissions, a notable increase from the 1,384 submissions received in 2022. This surge in submissions reflects the growing interest and confidence in our journal as a leading platform for scholarly dissemination in the field of education.
Furthermore, I am thrilled to announce that our journal's citation factor has doubled, underscoring the impact and relevance of the research published in the Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice. Additionally, our article downloads were up by 232 percent in 2023, indicating a strong readership and engagement with the content we publish.
To ensure that our journal continues to uphold the highest standards of excellence and relevance, our editorial board has undergone expansion, welcoming 18 new scholars to our team. This diverse and dynamic board brings a wealth of expertise and perspectives, enriching our journal's editorial process and decision-making.
In a recent vote, 84% of our board members affirmed their support for maintaining the editorial direction of the journal while advocating for a more focused approach to select topic areas. As a result, we will be narrowing down our topic areas to ensure greater coherence and depth in the research we publish, aligning with the evolving needs and interests of our readership.
Additionally, I am pleased to share that 90% of our board members voted to continue publishing case studies, recognizing their valuable contribution to the practical application of research in higher education contexts. Furthermore, 100% of our board members supported the aim of having 5% of our articles focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, reflecting our commitment to promoting social justice and inclusivity in higher education.
In other decisions, 32% of our board members voted against partnering with conferences, while only 26% advocated for discipline-specific special issues. Thus, we will not be pursuing any conference partnerships or having any discipline specific special issues.
In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our authors, editors, reviewers, editorial board members, staff, and readers for their invaluable contributions and support. Together, we will continue to advance the frontiers of knowledge and make a positive impact on education theory and practice. Our journal has tremendously grown its impact and reach, and we will soon be a top-tier journal.
Sincerely,
Dr. Robert Tian
