NABP Book Editorial Policy

Authorship Policy

  • Authorship Criteria: Authors should have made substantial contributions to the conception, design, data acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of the work and should be involved in drafting or critically revising the manuscript. All authors must submit a statement of contribution. This statement will be reviewed by one of the editors of North American Business Press.
  • Acknowledgments: Authors should acknowledge individuals or organizations that have contributed to the work but do not meet the criteria for authorship.
  • Authorship Disputes: Authors should first attempt to resolve disputes within the group. When possible, discuss the issue with a supervisor, advisor, or mentor. Try to resolve the issue within the research group. If there is a persistent disagreement regarding authorship, it may help to discuss the issue with a senior colleague outside of the research group. In cases that cannot be resolved, the lead author, in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief of North American Business Press, will have the final authority to resolve the dispute.
  • Changes in Authorship: Once a manuscript is submitted, any changes in authorship should be communicated promptly to the editorial office, accompanied by a clear explanation and consent from all affected parties. Changes in authorship after publication should be avoided except in cases of significant error or misconduct.
  • Corresponding Author: Clearly designate the corresponding author responsible for communication with the editorial office, ensuring that they have the necessary knowledge and authority to respond to queries and take responsibility for the manuscript.

Editorial Process

  • Manuscript Submission: Before submitting a book, authors should send a book proposal, which should consist of the following: a book prospectus (including information about the book’s argument, its audience, and how it fits within the existing literature); an estimated word count, and CV of the author(s). One of the series editors will review the book proposal. If the book is accepted, the series editor will provide specific submission guidelines for the book.
  • Peer Review: All books undergo a rigorous peer-review process to ensure the quality and integrity of the published works. All reviews will be sent to a subject matter expert and will be completed within 120 days.
  • Editorial Decision: The publication decision will be sent to all the authors, along with specific rationale for the decision.
  • Author Revision:  Authors that are asked to revise their manuscripts will be given specific revisions to be made and deadlines dates for the revisions.
  • Copyediting and Proofreading: Authors are expected to thoroughly proofread and copy edit their manuscripts. In addition, North American Business Press’ editor will also edit all manuscripts.
  • Production and Typesetting: Depending on the nature of the subject, each book will be assigned specific typesetting and graphics instructions to ensure a consistent and professional appearance for published books.
  • Timely Publication: All books will be published in a timely manner, with reasonable deadlines for each stage of the publication process. Most books are published three months after the final manuscript has been received.

Publication Standards

  • Originality and Plagiarism: A series editor will make sure that all submitted manuscripts are original and properly cite any previously published work. All manuscripts will be checked with plagiarism detection software.
  • Language and Style: A series editor will ensure a high standard of language and style in published books.
  • Formatting and Layout: Depending on the nature of the subject, each book will be assigned specific typesetting and graphics instructions to ensure a consistent and professional appearance for published books.
  • Accuracy and Fact-Checking: Authors must provide accurate and well-researched content. During the review process, a reviewer will conduct fact-checking to minimize errors.
  • Citations and References: All manuscripts must follow APA 7th edition guidelines for proper citation and referencing and to give credit to the original sources and ensure intellectual integrity.

Copyright

  • Copyright Ownership: All authors will sign a manuscript agreement. Every agreement will clearly communicate copyright ownership. Each author will be given a copy of the agreement, and the publisher will also keep a copy of the agreement.
  • Permissions and Licensing: In the agreement all authors are sent, the following is included: The author(s) is responsible for obtaining permission necessary to quote from other works, to reproduce material already published and to reprint from other publications. Sometimes a publisher, approached to grant permission, will demand a nominal payment: it is the author’s / customer’s responsibility to see that such payment conditions are met.
  • Copyright Infringement: Ideas are not copyrighted, but the expression of those ideas captured in writing, video, audio, or other formats is protected by the copyright law. The old rule of copyrighted materials containing a copyright symbol is gone. Since January 1, 1978, anything set into a physical format (such as slides, handouts, illustrations, video and audio recordings, Web pages, PowerPoint presentations, photos, artwork, books, journals, even personal notes) is protected under the copyright law, whether it contains a copyright symbol or not.
    • Assume any work after 1978 is copyrighted.
    • When finding references, use one, at most two, articles from a single journal issue.
    • Select images from several sources, not just one.
    • If in doubt, seek permission from the copyright holder for repeated or extensive use.Educate authors about copyright infringement risks and their responsibilities in avoiding any legal issues.

Publication Ethics & Malpractice

  • Research Ethics: North American Business Press is committed to upholding the highest standards of research ethics. We expect all authors, editors, and reviewers to abide by the principles of professional ethics, including honesty, respect for others, integrity, and openness to criticism. We recognize the importance of protecting the rights and welfare of all research participants, authors, and editors and will not tolerate any form of unethical behavior. All participants in the research process must adhere to the Committee on Publication Ethics standards (publicationethics.org), including those related to informed consent, data collection, data analysis, data storage, and publication. Any research that involves human participants must receive approval from an independent ethical review board. We also expect authors to adhere to the standards of academic integrity, including accurate citation of sources and proper acknowledgement of other authors’ work.
  • Plagiarism and Duplication: Plagiarism refers to the act of using another's ideas, words, or results without giving proper credit. According to the Office of Research Integrity, this can include "theft or misappropriation of intellectual property and the substantial unattributed textual copying of another's work". It is easy to identify plagiarism when large portions of text are copied verbatim without citation, and manuscripts containing such plagiarism would not be accepted for publication. Reusing parts of text from an author's previous research publication is also a form of plagiarism and must be attributed accordingly. This is also true when reusing text from another author's work; it is essential to provide proper attribution and citation to avoid a misperception of unique contribution.
  • It is also important to avoid duplication, which is the reuse of substantial parts of an author's own published work without including the appropriate references is known as duplicate (or redundant) publication. This can range from republishing an identical paper in multiple journals to simply adding a little new data to a previously published paper.
  • All manuscripts will be checked by plagiarism and duplication software. Whether detected by software or reported to the publisher by a person, our editors will assess plagiarism cases on their individual merits. When plagiarism becomes evident post-publication, we may correct, retract or otherwise amend the original publication depending on the degree of plagiarism, context within the published article and its impact on the overall integrity of the published study.
